For Providers
As we talk to physicians, medical groups and those managing pain clinics around the Country, we hear three common concerns:
How can we get our chronic pain patients to follow through with their part of their treatment?

How can we motivate them to take responsibility for their own pain management?

How can we educate them and inspire them to take control of their pain instead of letting pain control them?

Under the vision and leadership of Rebecca Curtis, we founded Take Courage Coaching (TCC) to provide solutions to these concerns.

Inspirational Lectures During off weeks, patients can watch inspirational segments on DVD. The topics include: • Pain • Suffering • Patience • Fear • Disappointment • Sadness • Friendship • Family • Marriage • Parenting • Hope • Joy • Pleasure • Optimism • Resiliency • Perseverance • Sacrifice • Commitment • Self-esteem

Intellectual/Educational Group coaching classes Group coaching sessions (using telephone/bridge technology) are one-hour long, once per week. There is tremendous power in group coaching for those with chronic pain. Individuals make a commitment to the group in an environment of confidentiality and trust leading them to take a specific action. They are more likely to take action and follow through due to accountability, encouragement and the motivation they feel in the safety of a group of peers. A group setting allows sharing, support, practice, and the ability to personalize the learning. Topics covered during group coaching sessions include: • Goal setting and monitoring progress • Sleeping better and enough • Exercising regularly and safely • Pacing for success • Relaxing the body, relaxing the mind • Healthy behaviors around nutrition • Using medications safely • Maintaining healthy positive thought • Communicating better • Social/Assertiveness skills • Occupational/Vocational exploration • Staying motivated and overcoming obstacles • Effective Problem-solving and decision-making • Identifying and managing stress successfully • Integrating humor

Individual Sessions Our private tele-coaching sessions (using telephone or video conferencing technology) last 30 minutes once per week, and are conducted in the comfort of your patient's home or office -- regardless of their geographic location. Only a phone and the desire and commitment to move from pain to functionality is needed. Together, the patient and the coach, in collaboration with the medical providers, work on specific problems and find personalized solutions, which is the focus of the coaching until successful implementation. We include the family wherever necessary and possible. Based on research and on our own experience, we learn that individual coaching works because it gives encouragement, emotional support, accountability and structure to each patient, as they follow through on their goals.
